Alberta Farmer Increases Yields With ESN

Ken Krywko of Sturgeon County, Alberta farms with his two sons Dan and Brad on their family farm growing 3,300 acres of crops including canola, barley and hard red spring wheat. With farm roots tracing back to the 30s, Dan and Brad are now the fourth generation to farm this land.

There’s no question that Ken loves farming and will pass down his appreciation for the land to the next generation. “I love mother nature, getting up in the morning with the birds. It’s a way of life. Working the land is what I like to do.”

Getting started with ESN

Based on a recommendation from his retailer, Ken decided to try ESN on his wheat crop. He started by conducting trials on his field comparing wheat grown with ESN versus no ESN. The difference he saw in the wheat’s protein level sold him on adding ESN into his fertility program.

The formula for Krywko’s success

So how do the Krywko’s apply ESN for their wheat crop? ESN is put into the drill with sulfur and potash, so everything is combined in one fertilizer blend. It’s applied in a deep band placed ¼ to ½ an inch from the seed. “It’s as simple as that. It’s not complicated–we do everything in one pass.”

Besides the simplicity, the Krywko’s mention that ESN is a great fit for their sustainability goals on their farm and plan to be a customer for years to come.

“We just know for a fact that we are going to get better yields and higher proteins by using ESN.”
